Why It Matters

Why Apparel Brands Use Tech Packs

A reference image conveys the look of a garment. A tech pack provides the measurements, materials and construction decisions that help a factory develop it with fewer assumptions.

01 / CLARITY

Clearer Manufacturer Communication

Keep technical drawings, material details and construction instructions in one organized document instead of scattered messages.

02 / SAMPLING

More Focused Sample Revisions

Compare fit, measurements and design changes against recorded specifications rather than relying on memory or rough descriptions.

03 / CONSISTENCY

Better Production Reference

Use approved measurements, materials and revision records as a shared reference when a style progresses toward bulk production.

Inside the Document

What Should a Clothing Tech Pack Include?

A useful tech pack brings together the information needed to review, price and sample a specific garment. The exact pages depend on the product and stage of development.

01

Technical Flat Sketches

Front and back views, seam lines, panels, closures, pockets and design callouts.

02

Measurement Specifications

Points of measurement, base sizes, grading where applicable and agreed tolerances.

03

Fabric & Bill of Materials

Main fabric, lining, rib, trims, hardware, labels and component references.

04

Construction Details

Stitching, seam finishes, special construction notes and enlarged detail views.

05

Colors, Artwork & Branding

Colorways, print or embroidery placement, logos, labels and finishes.

06

Revisions & Approvals

Version number, changes after sampling and the current approved specifications.

A Practical Example

Why Jacket Tech Packs Need More Detail

A jacket may include a lining, zipper, pocket construction, custom hardware and more fabric components than a basic T-shirt. These details affect the pattern, sample and manufacturing specifications.

For example, a work jacket may need pocket and reinforcement callouts, while a varsity jacket may require rib specifications, patches and snap details. A puffer jacket may also need quilting and insulation information.

The point is not to create the longest file. It is to make the important design decisions clear for the garment being developed.

Common Questions

Clothing Tech Pack FAQs

What is the difference between a tech pack and a spec sheet?

A spec sheet usually focuses on garment measurements and sizing. A tech pack is broader: it brings together technical sketches, materials, construction, trims, artwork, labeling and version information alongside the measurement specifications.

Can I start a clothing project without a complete tech pack?

Yes. Reference photos, sketches or a sample garment can be useful starting points for a development discussion. More complete technical specifications will still be needed as the style moves toward sampling and production approval.

Can I use the same tech pack template for a hoodie and a jacket?

They can share a basic document structure, but each garment needs its own technical details. For instance, a lined jacket may require lining and closure information that a simple hoodie does not.

Does a completed tech pack guarantee an accurate first sample?

No. It helps reduce ambiguity, but sampling is still used to check the actual fit, fabric hand feel and construction. Comments and approved changes should be reflected in the current technical file.

How can I request a template from VANRD?

Use the Request Template link for your garment category to open our contact form, then tell us which template you need. The current page does not offer an automatic file download.
