What customization options are available for varsity jacket production?

Custom varsity jackets are built from four decisions: fabric and weight, construction and trims, decoration, and the private label pack. Each one changes cost, lead time and how the finished piece reads.

Fabric. The options we run most are wool melton body with genuine or faux leather sleeves, the classic formula; cotton twill as a lower-cost alternative body; fleece or quilted linings for warmth. For varsity jackets the practical weight reference is 24 oz melton wool is the gold standard for the body; lighter woollens reduce both weight and structure. Ordering by weight figure alone is not enough — two fabrics can both be called the same weight and still behave differently in wash, drape and color retention, so composition and shrinkage are confirmed by wash testing.

Construction and trims. The build includes a wool body with sleeves in genuine or faux leather, matched at the shoulder join; striped rib at collar, cuffs and hem, which is the signature of the category; chenille patch and lettering work, typically $3–8 per patch depending on size and complexity; quilted or fleece lining options for colder markets.

Decoration. Available routes include chenille patches, embroidery, applique letters, leather patches, contrast sleeve branding. Decoration is approved on the actual fabric rather than on a test swatch, because stretch, pile, coating and heat sensitivity all change the result.

Private label pack. Woven neck labels, size and care labels, logo tags, hangtags, barcoded polybags and printed cartons. A garment can leave the sewing line finished and still not be retail-ready, and this layer is what closes that gap.

A note specific to this category: A varsity jacket is judged on the patch. Chenille patch work is where the category's perceived value lives, and it carries its own supplier minimum and its own approval standard — so patch design has to be locked before the jacket is sampled, not after.
